Incremental Credentialing in Graduate Education

Purpose

This Playbook is designed to provide information to those working to develop incremental credentials—and incremental credentialing systems—at state systems of higher education, higher education institutions, and other organizations working in this space including policymakers investing in credentialing at the federal and state levels. The focus is on graduate and professional level incremental credentialling.

The Playbook:

  • Addresses key topics, policies, and practices in incremental credentialing.
  • Includes examples from universities developing incremental credentials at the graduate level.
  • Addresses the diverse audiences interested in incremental credentialing at the graduate level. These audiences may have differing levels of understanding about graduate/professional education and undergraduate education.
  • Recognizes that many institutions working in incremental credentialing are at different stages of knowledge and experience. Some are just beginning to explore incremental credentialing at the graduate and professional level. Others have developed approaches and are planning to pursue more. Still others have implemented well-developed microcredentialing policies and programs. Another group of stakeholders—including employers and state and federal policymakers—may be advocating for these developments.
