Why the Credential Was Developed

  • Surveying and Modeling Certificate is designed to provide extensive and comprehensive knowledge in land surveying and civil drafting that is required for the construction industry
  • The program focuses on learners with and entry-level or working knowledge of the construction industry, with the purpose of accelerating the student through various construction surveying and modeling procedures

How the Credential Was Developed

  • Construction management faculty designed the credential to serve students and employees looking for surveying and modeling skills separate from a full degree
  • The certificate will also be available for students who left the college with completed coursework but no degree
  • The credential is recorded on a student’s transcript when conferred. A certificate document is also provided to the student

The Targeted Learners

  • Learners with interest in the construction industry
  • Employees in the construction industry looking to gain planning skills
  • Previous students with completed courses in Construction Management, but not a completed degree
  • Courses are available both in-person and online

Lessons Learned

  • The need for a collaborative effort and lift from many different areas on campus: administration, faculty, advising, registrar, admissions, to make this as seamless an option for students to opt in

  • Apply knowledge, techniques, skills, and tools of the construction industry in construction activities
  • Demonstrate care and use of engineering levels, differential leveling, traversing, boundary surveying, public lands, construction surveying and horizontal and vertical curve computation
  • Apply knowledge on traverse adjustments by various rules, area computation, legal terminology, riparian rights, legal descriptions, common law, statutory law, public lands, construction survey note keeping, construction etiquette, construction layout, slope staking, horizontal and vertical curve layout
  • Describe and define proposed construction, new construction, new installations, or modifications and remodeling to existing facilities and properties for the clients
