Role of Partnerships in Incremental Credentialing

The pathways through which learners engage with education are as diverse as the learners themselves. Learners acquire knowledge and skills through formal education; nonformal learning such as workplace training, noncredit workforce programs, work-based learning, or apprenticeship programs; and informal learning through individual experiences. This variety causes challenges in creating a coherent learning framework which can be summed up in the following questions: How can a learner connect those building blocks to create a coherent roadmap with clear and useful on- and off-ramps? How are those roadmap opportunities communicated to the learner and implemented?

Creating a transparent, learner-centered system is crucial for coordinating the various resources and inputs contributing to a successful learning journey. To achieve this, credential providers should focus on several overarching questions:

  • Who are the learners, and what are their goals?
  • How can we design a seamless system that meets learners' needs and effectively communicates these options?
  • Which services within my institution/organization must support these learners?
  • Who are the external partners that can help us achieve these objectives?
